Andrew Kimball, the son of Heber Chase Kimball and Ann A. Gheen, was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1858. While a teenage boy he supported his mother and sisters and worked in different positions for the Utah Central Railroad Company. In 1882, he married Olive Woolley and two years later left for his mission to the Indian Territory to preach to the Cherokees.
